Choosing Science Event 2017

All Yr10 pupils attended a ‘Choosing Science’ event at the Springtown site on Wednesday 18 January.  Pupils were inspired by a wide range of science ambassadors from the local community  who presented their experiences to the pupils, ensuring pupils are more informed as they move forward with subject and career choices this year.

Year 14 Youth and Philanthropy Initiative

The Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) is an active citizenship programme that raises awareness among young people about philanthropy and their local community. Year 14 pupils were responsible for allocating a £2000 YPI grant to a local charity through a unique programme of team work, research and competition. YPI is all about creativity and passion, leaving the four walls of the classroom behind and supporting the issues young people care about most.

The charities our Year 14 pupils presented on were:

North West Islamic Association
Foyle Down Syndrome Trust
Foyle Food Bank
Foyle Parents and Friends
Foyle Search and Rescue
ZEST

Each group delivered an engaging presentation, incorporating treasure hunts, interactive games, statistics, video clips and first person accounts from benefeciaries of their respective charities.

Thank you to Mrs McLaughlin, Matthew Austin, Hannah Lawther and YPI Facilitator, Catherine McColgan, who acted as judges during our competition. They certainly had a difficult task!

Congratulations to 14E whose charity Foyle Food Bank were selected as the recipients of YPI's £2000 grant. Well done, girls!
