Voice of the Future

The annual Junior Chamber Voice of the Future event took place last night in the Northern Ireland Science Park.  Voice of the Future is broken up in to two categories (13-15 & 16-18) and Foyle College had highly confident participants in both; Chloe McCarter (Year 9), Jason Nolan (Year 14) and Blake Gray (Year 14).

Special congratulations to Blake Gray who was a winner in his section, presenting an engaging speech entitled 'Derry City is a great place to start a business'.Well done to all involved and a special thank you to Chris Gray, Junior Chamber President, for continuing to organise this enjoyable event.

Mandarin Language Course

Last year, a number of Lower and Upper Sixth pupils were given the opportunity to study a ten-week course in basic Mandarin as part of the Confucius Classroom scheme.  The teachers, Liu Fang and Pi Wenli, who delivered teaching in Chinese language and culture were seconded from Hanban in China to the University of Ulster.

It looked like an interesting course and it was something that hadn’t been offered at Foyle College. We learnt basic phrases and words like how to introduce yourself and talk about your family. It was an interesting approach to learning the language as we used not only PowerPoints but also songs to help us remember words.

PTFA Donations

A huge thank you to our PTFA for their much needed donations to the school at the end of June.  Shown in the photograph is Mrs Sarah Guthrie receiving an iPad from PTFA Chairperson, Mrs Diane Leeson.  Also included are Ms Lisa McAuley, Mrs Jayne Kane and Mrs Fiona Feeney.

In total the PTFA financed 11 iPads, 4 Apple TVs, an A3 Visualiser and Printer and an annual magazine subscription to subject areas including Geography, Home Economics, Modern Languages, PE, Art & Design and Special Educational Needs.  The PTFA also made a sizeable donation of £20,000 to help support the school’s extra-curricular provision.

During the current school year the PTFA are hoping to raise funds to support the deployment of iPads to teaching staff to be used to enhance learning and teaching.  Everyone on the staff appreciates the support given by the PTFA and would encourage all those associated with Foyle College to get involved and support their events.”
