Welcome to The French Department

At FoyleCollege we believe that in order to be fully prepared to meet the demands of our ever changing world it is imperative to be able to communicate in a second language.   French is spoken in 60 countries around the world and is highly in demand by potential employers as 1 out of every 5 UKcompanies and 74% of employers are looking for school-leavers with language skills.

Pupils begin their study of French in Year 8 and at Key Stage 3 cover a variety of topics such as general greetings, hobbies and interests and the Francophone world.  As language teachers, our priority is to make our teaching relevant to our pupils and to stimulate enjoyment and engagement with the subject.

In 2011 Year 10 pupils completed Entry Level 3 in the CCEA Online Language Assessment in French which gave them a European recognised qualification before their journey into Key Stage 4.

What can you do with languages?

Aside from the obvious benefits of being able to communicate when abroad and of improving self confidence and assertiveness to communicate with others, there exist a wide variety of careers in which languages are either essential or highly sought after.

Careers paths for language graduates include:

International Business, Marketing, Journalism, IT, European Law, Human Relations, Foreign Embassies, UNESCO, Government Intelligence, Teaching, Translation, Interpreting, Armed Forces, and Tourism.  The possibilities are endless! For more information see: www.languageswork.org.uk
