Congratulations to Year 13 and 14 pupils Hollie, Lindsay, Sarah and Conall who participated in the HSBC/British Council Mandarin Speaking Competition 2018 at The Mac Theatre in Belfast on Tuesday 27th November.  Although these pupils have only been learning Mandarin since the beginning of their Lower Sixth year, they performed very well against more experienced pupils from other schools in the north-west.

Thanks to the pupils and Honge for all their hard work and many hours of preparation over the past few weeks.  Well done!

Year 14 Interview Skills Day 2018

Year 14 Interview Skills Day at Foyle College was a credit to the students and interviewers taking part. Interviewers from Seagate, Fujitsu, Western Trust HR department, Lisnagelvin, Primary School, Bank of Ireland, Grafton recruitment and many other industries conducted mock interviews to help prepare our students for life after Foyle College. Students befitted greatly from the knowledge and experience of the interviewers who were tailored to suit their specialist area.

In preparation for the mock interviews, Pat Jamison from Sentinus conducted a workshop to prepare students in "How to complete an application form" and "How to market yourself for an Interview". Each student participated in a one to one or group interview and were given written or verbal feedback.

Interviewers commented that Foyle Students were very well informed and prepared for the mock interviews. They acknowledged the wealth of activities that many students were involved in from Duke of Edinburgh, Volunteering and many sporting activities. These extra-curricular activities provided students with many experiences which highlighted their skills and qualities.

I personally would like to thank the Interviewers for giving up their time to assist our students in succeeding in applications and interviews for University, College or the World of Work.

Science Site Visits 2018

Yr8  recently had the opportunity to make site visits to Invista ( Lycra production), Lough’s agency, Prehen and had a visit from the Derry City Councils’s Biodiversity Officer. All these experiences enabled Yr8 to relate Science to careers directly linked to the local area and also raised important environmental considerations linked to the maintenance of our newly acquired honey beehive population.

City of London Corporation: Business of Trust Celebration Event

Invest Derry City and Strabane, DCSDC, facilitated an extension of the Lord Mayor of the City of London's visit to the Playhouse Theatre, by inviting three of our Y13 pupils to attend a Business of Trust Celebration event at Mansion House. Joined by pupils from St Cecilia's College and St Mary's College, the Lord Mayor, Alderman Charles Bowman, specifically referenced the work he had carried out with the pupils during his visit to our city, and celebrated how they helped steer the direction of the overall project. Pupils also had the opportunity to speak with Edward Montgomery, The Honourable The Irish Society, and Deputy Henry Pollard, City of London Corporation, about the project and its benefits for our city.

Our pupils visited the Merchant Taylors' Hall where they were greeted by Liveryman Richard McBride, alumni and current Governor of Foyle College. Mr McBride shared information about the Merchant Taylors' Society and outlined their philanthropic role within various communities.

A special recognition to Merchant Taylors, our sponsors for the event. Thank you to William Elliott, City of London Corporation, and Stephen Gillespie and Adam Goodall, DCSDC, who planned the itinerary meticulously.
