Astronomy Presentation

A few members of the group of Year 11 pupils who attended an Astronomy presentation in Strabane’s Alley Theatre on Tuesday 9th April.

The talk was delivered by Armagh Planetarium to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Annie Russell Maunder, a very important figure in the world of Astronomy who was born in Strabane on 14th April 1868, and aptly titled “From Strabane to the Dark Side of the Moon”.

Top Role For Foyle Student

Foyle College student Rebekah Thompson has been honoured at a formal ceremony at Parliament Buildings, Stormont. 17-year-old Rebekah from Drumahoe becomes Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet for the City of Londonderry.
She will be one of just twelve Lord Lieutenants’ Cadets appointed across Northern Ireland.  The Cadets who are selected for the largely ceremonial year-long role can expect a busy year in office as they attend their respective Lord Lieutenants on major civic occasions.  In recognition of their role, they are entitled to wear a special insignia on their uniforms throughout their year in office.
Cadet Sergeant Major Rebekah Thompson, a student at Foyle College, has been a member of Drumahoe Detachment for four years, bringing liveliness and dedication to the detachment.  Always at the heart of the fun and action, Rebekah rarely misses detachment parade nights and has attended three summer camps and one Easter camp. Rebekah is an enthusiastic team player and has represented Northern Ireland Army Cadet Force in national first aid competitions on two occasions. She has also represented her detachment and Company in the Tripoli Cup Competition for the past two years, winning best section commander and driving her team to second place in the tough tournament … a position she hopes to better this year!
