Dr Martin Stern

We were privileged to welcome Holocaust survivor Dr Martin Stern to Foyle College.  He addressed Year 11 - 14 History and Year 14 Religious Studies students.  All pupils were then given the opportunity to engage in a question and answer session where Dr Stern candidly described his early life in Nazi occupied Europe.
This was a chance for pupils to look beyond the facts and figures of their History and Religious Studies lessons, and to truly appreciate the effects of the Holocaust on ordinary human beings.
We are very grateful to the Executive Office and The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust for facilitating Dr Stern's visit.  His tour of local schools is part of a wider project which will culminate in a Holocaust Memorial Day event in the Millennium Forum on 25th January 2018.

Schools Organ Competition

We are pleased to announce that Foyle College have been chosen as the winners of the Guildhall Organ Festival Schools Organ Competition and will receive a Viscount Chorum 40S organ for the new school. The entry included an application from the school, attendance at an organ workshop of 5 senior pupils - Charlotte Davis, Emily Gwynne, Katie House, Zara Glenn and Naomi Lawther.

Following the workshop pupils took part in an interview with members of the Royal College of Organists, Viscount Organs and Derry-Strabane District Council.

Congratulations to all concerned.

New Driver NI 2017

As a follow up to the Letterkenny Roadsafe Roadshow, Stephen Savage from New Driver NI delivered an informative presentation to our Y13 pupils on road safety. Statistics, anecdotes and a handy magazine full of top tips for young drivers reinforced the cautionary messages, on the importance of driving responsibly, from last week.

Roadsafe Roadshow

Year 13 pupils travelled to Aura Leisure Centre, Letterkenny, for the annual Roadsafe Roadshow. Pupils heard first-hand accounts of the repercussions of a road traffic accident for victims, families and the various agencies who attend the scene. During the sobering experience, professionals from the PSNI, An Garda Síochána and the National Ambulance Service recounted traumatic scenes they have witnessed within their roles. In addition, road traffic accident victims and their families gave honest accounts of how their lives changed in the aftermath of a single car accident.

Our thanks to Stuart Crutchley, Road Policing Education Officer, for continuing to facilitate this important Roadshow for our pupils.
