Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards

Congratulations Gareth!

Many congratulations to Gareth Connor (14E) who has been named as one of 20 Finalists in the 2013 Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards, an all Ireland recognition programme for outstanding young volunteers.

Gareth was nominated for his services to Institute Football Club’s Youth Academy and Mini Soccer Programme over the past five years.

By hosting three weekly sessions, Gareth is helping to take young children off the streets, allowing them to play and learn in a safe, controlled environment while promoting healthy and active lifestyles.  Participating in sporting activities has also encouraged these young people to socialise with other children from different communities and across the religious divide, helping to break down barriers and stamp out discrimination.

Volunteering three nights a week has meant a significant personal commitment but without doing so, the children would not have had a coach or manager to develop their skills and someone to take them to matches.

Gareth will receive a €500 award and an engraved medal.

Gareth and his parents will attend a gala awards dinner at Lough Eske Castle in Donegal on 26th March, when two All-Ireland Youth Volunteers of the Year will be named.  They will each receive €1,000 for a charity of their choice, a gold medallion and an all-expense paid trip to the United States in May to participate in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards ceremony.

We wish him every success in March!

New Art and Design Workshops

Our students are again taking part in a variety of activities, both inside and outside of school, which helps them connect effectively with the big world of Art and Design.

Bernie Murphy, a local textile designer, was invited into the school to run a set of half day workshops with some of our creative Yr.12 and 14 students. They worked very effectively and made the most of this opportunity to develop new technical skills. Our thanks must go to Bernie as she so successfully managed to help so many students develop worthwhile pieces within such a tight timeframe.

·         Jamie Baldrick was one of a small select group of local A level students to work with noted Irish sculpture Philip McFadden in a workshop organised by the Gordon Gallery.

·         Caroline Gilliland and Jake Desmond, both ex-pupils, have been doing a great job working after school with Junior School pupils in both the Photography and Film Clubs.

·         Four of our current A2 students - Anna Kilgore, Inge Swiegers, Laura McElhinney and Jamie Baldrick have been building up their portfolios by going to the value for money night classes at the N W Regional College each Thursday night.

In the coming weeks of the spring term we hope to see some of our Senior students take part in a set of Architecture workshops funded by The Architecture Foundation, London.

Digital Survey ILEX

ILEX, the urban regeneration company, in conjunction with Foyle Learning Community, is undertaking an online Digital Survey of school children between 11 and 18 years to determine the access pupils have to digital media. It’s important that all secondary schools in the Derry City Council area take part in this online survey.

Pupils from each participating school will be entered into a draw and one person from each participating school will win a Microsoft Surface Tablet & Keyboard. The survey closes on Friday 13th December 2013.
