French trip 2013

Year 10 French Trip 2013

This year’s annual French trip took place from the 9th – 13th June 2013.  The action packed trip gave Year 10 pupils the opportunity to use their French in an authentic environment, to marvel at the beauty of the impressive sites of Paris and the surrounding area and to visit some of the most popular tourist destinations.

Monday involved an impressive tour of the Stade de France, where pupils and staff had the privilege of not only seeing around the grounds but also of visiting the dressing rooms and the Presidential Box.  This was followed by a visit to Chartres and the Château de Versailles.

Day two was the long awaited trip to Disneyland.  Pupils and staff spent 14 hours going on all the famous rides before being treated to a spectacular lights and fireworks display for the 20th anniversary finale.

Wednesday allowed pupils to appreciate many of the sites of Paris.  The day began with a trip to the top of the Eiffel tower followed by a boat trip on Les Bateaux Mouches, before a leisurely afternoon around the Notre Dame.  The day finished with a coach night tour of Paris and a meal in a typically French restaurant.

On Thursday there was just some time for some last minute shopping in Val d’Europe before heading to the airport early to thankfully avoid any of the strike chaos which had been affecting airports throughout the week.

All pupils and staff had a fantastic time and pupils gained a lot from being able to communicate in French and from seeing the size and beauty of the famous landmarks in real life.

Fun Run 2013

Purpose of the Fun Run

Raise awareness for health and fitness amongst the pupils and staff in Foyle College. Also to help
raise awareness of the work done by the NI Children’s Hospice in Northern Ireland and raise some
much needed funds. The Children’s hospice currently cares for 300 children annually, all with lifelimiting
conditions. Some of the children are cared for in the hospice itself, but most will be cared
for at home, through community nursing teams.
What is happening?

Fun run involves 26 pupils from the Foyle College Athletics Team and each will be running 1 mile.
The 26 miles covered by the pupils symbolises the distance of the marathon and ties in with staff
participation in both the recent London Marathon and the upcoming local Walled City Marathon.
Included with the pupils are Mrs Anita McDowell, a nurse from the Children’s Hospice and Foyle
College staff members Mrs Michaela Leonard & Mr Derek Harrington who are involved with the
running of Foyle College Athletics. Also included are Neil Stewart and Clive Austin, Neil has
completed the recent London Marathon for the second time and both are due to run the local
Walled City Marathon at the start of June. Clive is an experienced marathon runner having
completed 26 marathons in his running career.

Fundraising

The run today brings the fundraising efforts for the Children’s Hospice to a culmination and again the
pupils, staff and suppliers of Foyle College have made a massive effort and helped raise in excess of
£3,000 to help fund the ongoing costs of the Children’s Hospice.
