Year 14 Youth and Philanthropy Initiative

The Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) is an active citizenship programme that raises awareness among young people about philanthropy and their local community. Year 14 pupils were responsible for allocating a £2000 YPI grant to a local charity through a unique programme of team work, research and competition. YPI is all about creativity and passion, leaving the four walls of the classroom behind and supporting the issues young people care about most.

The charities our Year 14 pupils presented on were:

North West Islamic Association
Foyle Down Syndrome Trust
Foyle Food Bank
Foyle Parents and Friends
Foyle Search and Rescue
ZEST

Each group delivered an engaging presentation, incorporating treasure hunts, interactive games, statistics, video clips and first person accounts from benefeciaries of their respective charities.

Thank you to Mrs McLaughlin, Matthew Austin, Hannah Lawther and YPI Facilitator, Catherine McColgan, who acted as judges during our competition. They certainly had a difficult task!

Congratulations to 14E whose charity Foyle Food Bank were selected as the recipients of YPI's £2000 grant. Well done, girls!

Year 12 Mock Examinations January 2017

Year 12 Mock Examinations January 2017

Report to the sports hall at the time shown in the first column for each exam – 9:10 for the morning session, 11:45 for the midday session and 1:50 for the afternoon session. Any gap between this time and the start of the exam can be spent preparing and revising. Pupils entitled to extra time will be given this through added time at the start and/or end of the sessions. Music and Art exams will be in their respective rooms.

If you do not have an exam in a particular session, then you may revise at home. If you choose to prepare in school, then you are to use the study hall or library for revision when there is a gap in your schedule. You must sign out, at the office, if you are going home after an exam. Full school uniform is to be worn on any occasion when you are in school.

You must plan to be present for all of your papers – the real GCSE exams have very strict rules regarding this and we are trying to make our school exams as realistic as possible. If you are ill and unable to attend, you should contact the school as early as possible to arrange an alternative time.

Magnetic Stirrer

Year 11 Chemistry students using the magnetic stirrer purchased using funding from the Biological and Medicinal Chemistry Sector (BMCS) Interest Group of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).

The BMCS is a group that convenes national and international conferences in the broad area of pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical science.  The members of the group are very aware that the wellbeing of their industry has depended for many years on the supply of talented young chemists in the UK.  Their journey towards a career in this sector of chemistry starts during their primary and secondary education so it is most appropriate that the BMCS supports this phase of education where it can.

Our thanks go to BMCS for their contribution which will allow us to enrich the experience of our students in the immediate future and in years to come.
