Welcome to Junior Science

Welcome to the Junior Science department.

KS3 Science is taught together as Integrated Science in Years 8 & 9 with a time allocation of 3 double periods per week. . In Yr10 the Science is taught  as separate biology, chemistry and physics lessons with subject specialist teachers, to prepare students for the GCSE courses they start in Yr11. Each separate Science subject is allocated 1 double period per week.

The purpose of this site is to keep you up to date with the many activities ongoing within the department, both in and outside the classroom, meeting the requirements of the KS3 curriculum. The Yr8-10 good student awards in Science will also be published here every month to celebrate the achievement of pupils displaying hardwork and commitment in science.

Pupils can retrieve missed worksheets/homework sheets from the junior science section on the school VLE site and access extra revision worksheets. Please keep checking back to this micro site as it is developed to see the updates.

Summer Term: Scifest

On  Tuesday 11 June six of our Yr9 pupils attended the North West stage of the Scifest competition at the Magee campus of the University of Ulster. This was the culmination of science project work they had completed during the year. Emily Dougherty, Oisin O'Connell and Scott Hand brought a physics based Rollercoaster Study with them. Having constructed a K'Nex rollercoaster kit using funds donated by the Parent's Association they had the opportunity to investigate the energy changes  and forces associated with movement along the rollercoaster. Having presented their work to two sets of judges they were awarded one of the top prizes within the technology category- well done to them! The three girls, Hanna Hunter, Casey Reid and Laura Hegarty also were commended on their presentation skills when faced with the judges for their project which investigated microalgae as a potential biofuel. All pupils said they have really enjoyed the experience and both groups will recieve Bronze Science Crest Awards for their efforts.  We have a few of our photographs shown here  but you can go to the gallery for further photographs of this event.
