Double Award

Science (Double Award)

All pupils in year 11 follow the Double Award Science specification which offers a balanced Science course. The Double Award Science, as its name indicates, is worth two GCSE grades.

In year 11 all pupils are taught Biology, Chemistry and Physics in units, a specialist in that particular science teaches each unit. Pupils are assessed by externally set and marked unit tests, accounting for 33% of the final GCSE grade

In year 12 pupils continue to be taught Biology, Chemistry and Physics by specialist teachers.  Pupils are again assessed by externally set and marked unit tests, accounting for 42% of the final grade.

The remaining 25% of the assessment is through Controlled Assessment or practical skills.

There are two tiers of entry: Foundation and Higher.

Candidates entering for the Foundation Tier are eligible for the award of

Grades CC to GG.

Unit Title

The Higher Tier is intended for candidates in the Grade range A*A* to DD.

However candidates entered for the Higher Tier can be awarded any of the eight grades A*A* to GG. Double intermediate grades such as AB and BC are also awarded.

Target

The Double Award Science course provides a preparation for the study of biology, chemistry and physics at GCE Advanced Level.

If you intend to study any science at A level, Physics in particular, you are strongly advised to take Additional Mathematics at GCSE. In fact the knowledge and skills gained by following this course will greatly assist you when it comes to studying any A level science.

In the 2012 examinations Bethan Heath was placed 3rd in CCEA Double Award Science in Northern Ireland.
