GREAT ART AND DESIGN TRIPS

Each year senior school students studying Art and Design regularly get the chance to visit galleries and museums so that they can see and experience a variety of professionally made creative pieces. This year they have so far been out and about to see creative work  shown at The Void Gallery, The Gordon Gallery, The London Street Gallery and the Shirt Factory Gallery.

We also took some students out for the day to visit the Ulster Museum in Belfast. When we were there we got to see and learn from the annual exhibition of GCSE and A level school work and also enjoyed the current exhibition of work which showcased a very broad range of modern artistic approaches.

Happily, in addition to all of this, on a recent visit to the school,  Master John Price took the opportunity to present certificates to some of our creatively gifted students who had successfully shown their photography in London as part of the photography competition organised and funded by the Merchant Taylor’s Company. Very well done to one and all.

Social Innovators

Derryschools take part in Young Social Innovators projects

Three schools from the North West took part in a Social Innovators project aimed at making life better for people within their schools/communities.  Each school had to identify a social issue and carry out a research task into the problem and then devise a set of actions to help solve it.  Each school had to submit a 4000 word report on their issue and then go to Belfast City Hall last Wednesday where they took part in a regional ‘Speak Out’ on the issue.  Below is a summary of the projects that the schools were involved in.

Hunger Run

A number of students from Foyle College participated in Children in Crossfire’s Hunger Run last Sunday (23rd March) along with Ms Sloane.  The purpose of the Hunger Run was for Children in Crossfire to raise awareness of and vital funds for their nutritional projects in both Ethiopia and Tanzania.  A great day was had by all!  Joel Rosborough finished in fourth place with Jason Nolan, Stephen Walker, Jack Taylor and Kielan Stevenson hot on his heels!  Ms Sloane will be training twice as hard for next year to keep up!!!!  The event was sponsored by Dominoes Pizza who provided a seemingly endless supply of delicious carbs after the race!!

Raising Funds For Cancer Research

Parents and pupils,

From February we are partnering with Cancer Research UK to raise valuable funds to support Cancer Research UK's life-saving work into children's cancers.

In the UK around 4 children are diagnosed with cancer every day. Today, almost 3 in 4 children survive and with your support we can help even more children beat cancer and look forward to a much brighter future

As part of our !ongstanding relationship with Cancer Research UK we are again running the UK's biggest clothes collection - Give Up Clothes for Good. This is the first time the campaign will run all year round, giving people more opportunities to donate, raising more funds to help beat kids' cancers sooner.

We are asking the whole community to bring in their unwanted clothes, accessories and quality homeware to their local TK Maxx store at Lisnagelvin or to Foyle College. We are asking pupils to donate at least one item but if you would like to donate more, bags are available from the TK-Max store or Foyle College school reception.Donated items will be sold in Cancer Research UK shops to raise much needed funds.

This partnership has been so successful to-date that, together with our sister HomeSense stores, we have raised a staggering £13.5 million, of which £9million has gone towards research into children's cancers. And we aim to raise even more vital funds for this leading children's cancer charity by the end of 2014
