The Senior School Council would like to thank the staff and students who participated in their Comic Relief 'Dare to Wear Red' non-uniform day today. Congratulations to Candace Gillon and Ryan Johnston who were awarded prizes for the most 'daring' outfits! In total, Foyle College raised £520.00 for Comic Relief, and this will go directly towards their projects in both Africa and the UK.
Despite the industrial action by a number of trades unions on Friday 13th March Foyle College will be operating as normal with a full timetable for all pupils. Can I ask parents to do their best to make alternative travel arrangements for pupils as this is a vital time of the year for all year groups but especially for the exam classes.
If we receive any further information about the provision of school buses by Translink we will, of course, pass it on as soon as possible to parents. My thanks to all parents for their help on Friday to minimise the disruption caused to pupils education.
Congratulations to Abbie Nolan, Year 9, who achieved second place in the highly competitive Dr McCabe Public Speaking Event promoting Home Safety. The topic was 'Slips, Skids and Falls', and Abbie delivered an extremely impressive speech.
Cassy Murphy, also Year 9, was highly commended by the adjudicators.
Frank Dunleavy, Ulster University's Student Financial Advisor, delivered an informative presentation to our Year 14 pupils this morning. All pupils found the content interesting, and his budgeting advice was most beneficial!
Thank you to Frank for taking time from his busy schedule to address our pupils.
To celebrate Danske Bank’s on-going Schools’ Cup Rugby sponsorship, Danske has some fantastic sports prizes to be won by Discovery Current Account holders and Foyle College in their Win With TEAM Danske prize draw, which includes:-
A chance for pupils aged 11-17 to win £50 sports vouchers.
Every week from now until 21st June, Danske Bank will be giving 10 lucky winners a £50 voucher to spend in O’Neills,
SS Moore, JD Sport or Podium4Sport.
The more pupils who take part and enter their school name, the more chance our school gets to win 1 of 4 £1000 Sports Bursaries, which could be used for sports kit, training equipment, sports tours or mini-bus. For example, if 10 pupils enter the draw, our school will be entered into the bursary draw 10 times.
To take part, pupils must first have a Danske Discovery Current Account and then visit www.teamdanske.com.
Any pupil who wishes to open a Discovery Account should see one of the Lower Sixth School Bank Advisors or Mrs Eakin.
A Spanish trip to Queen’s University in Belfast took place on Wednesday 25th February for a Spanish Film presentation and workshop.
The film, Un Franco, 14 Pesetas, directed by and starring Carlos Iglesias, was a heart-warming and ultimately uplifting story of a family who are forced to emigrate from Spain to Switzerland in the 1960s. It depicts life in a post-war, dictatorial Spain, showing the struggle of leaving one's home and adapting to a new country and its culture. The story is based on the director's own boyhood experiences and has won several international film prizes.
The trip was thoroughly enjoyed by pupils, and was a worthwhile opportunity to liaise with other A-level language students and get a feel for language courses at university level.
