In the course of the next few years, Foyle and Londonderry College will be transformed from the two old buildings of Foyle, and the Londonderry High School, which have been our home for thirty years. It has long been our ambition to bring the school together on one site and to give pupils access to the best facilities which we can provide. With the announcement of the Secretary of State in December 2004 of funding for the project on the former Clooney Base, we are now nearing the accomplishment of our ambitions. |
Once we set out on the planning phase of the project, the main elements driving the design will be the priorities for the school which we decide to emphasise. Not surprisingly we want the school to reclaim its reputation in the three key areas of academic achievement, extra-curricular excellence and pastoral support. To this end, the Governors have resolved to raise money to allow the school to enhance its facilities by launching a Development Fund. The aim of the fund will be to supplement the provision of facilities set out by the Department of Education in their building handbook.
The specific areas of focus for the Development Fund would be facilities for Sport, Music and the Performing Arts, and for independent study. These are all key elements in the preparation of pupils for their future lives, building a foundation for their careers and for their leisure which we hope will support a prosperous and happy lifestyle. Our aim is to send pupils out into the world having experienced the most supportive environment while yet being prepared for the challenges of life. Classrooms alone do not do that. Only by surrounding the core academic work of the school with enhanced provision, can we 'add value' to the education they receive.

With our four hundredth anniversary fast approaching, it is essential that Foyle and Londonderry College retains its rightful place at the forefront of educational development in the City and Province. The College has always taken pride in educating and equipping its young people to meet the challenges of life and our aim is that it will continue to do so for the next four hundred years, and beyond. To that end, plans are now well advanced to build a new school on a prestigious thirty two acre site at Clooney in the Waterside. |
As the Headmaster has commented, the limitations placed on the College by adherence to the Department of Education Building Handbook, which defines what accommodation we can expect, restricts us in what we would wish to provide for our pupils.
As a former pupil, current or past parent, or merely someone who wishes to retain the ethos and qualities that have existed for almost four centuries, we hope you will support us in our aspiration to continue to provide quality education across an expanding curriculum, appealing to the same wide constituency.
Our aim is to raise sufficient funds to supplement the design with a range of facilities that will enhance the campus, offering Foyle as a "must have" option for all prospective pupils. Plans and targets are currently being formulated and we will update this in due course.
I look forward to hearing from you and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the College Bursar, Neil Stewart, or myself. Alternatively you can visit our website at www.foyle-lderry.org.uk where regular updates will be available.
